New Horizons: A Life-Changing Program for People in Crisis

New Horizons is a two-year participatory program funded by Open Doors, an Amazing Grace Foundation. Inspired by the Old and New Testament Scriptures that tell us to love God with all our hearts and to love others as ourselves, this program helps people who are going through tough times by stressing love of self, love of God and love of others.

Love of self is fostered in the following ways:

- Participants are given safe, comfortable, private and affordable living quarters (one of two OpenDoors’ apartments in Park Ridge, NJ) while they are in the two-year program

- Each participant is assigned a special friend by Open Doors. The friend keeps in regular contact with the participant, listens, encourages and acts as a liaison between the participant and the Board of Trustees, Advisory Council, local clergy and social services when additional advice or assistance is needed.

Love of God is fostered by:

- Encouraging participants to become part of a faith family.

- Providing inspirational literature for private reading and/or discussion.

Love of others is fostered by:

- Encouraging participants to volunteer their time and efforts on a regular basis to help others. Possibilities include, but are not limited to: helping at church, at a daycare center, in a hospital or nursing home, in a library or school, at a shelter or food bank, etc.

Please Note: Participants are selected by the Open Doors Board of Trustees based on applications, recommendations and personal interviews. Participants pay a monthly housing fee (approximately half of market value, with no security deposit required), monthly utility costs for their unit and a percentage of all repairs in line with what they can afford. This program is not a permanent crutch, but a temporary helping hand. Participants sign a two-year contract of involvement in the program, but the length of stay may be terminated or extended by the Board of Trustee in line with the needs and gains of the participant. Important: Participants must be non-smokers; smoking is not permitted in or near the apartments.

New Horizons is an Open Doors program that gives people a hand-up toward a stable, fulfilling life. It provides low-cost housing in exchange for movement toward independence, volunteering to help others, and active spiritual involvement.
